There's something to be said about making your own hummus. First off, the flavor is so much more complex than store-bought. Second, you can tweak the recipe depending on what consistency you like, additional ingredients, and texture.
I've tried a couple of online hummus recipes and I've tweaked the best of them to suit my family's style. Plus, this basic recipe is only FOUR ingredients.

Hummus Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 can of Organic Garbanzo Beans (if you can't find organic you can use regular)
- 1/2 Cup Tahini (Found at any Indian store. Try a grocer with an international food section as well.)
- 1/4 cup Olive Oil (extra virgin if you've got it)
- 1/2 tsp. Garlic Powder
Directions
Open and drain garbanzo beans. Reserve the liquid for later use.
Using an immersion blender, add all of the ingredients EXCEPT for the bean juice to a tall container.
Blend on high speed until most of the beans are broken down.
If you find the hummus is too thick, start adding 1/4 cup of the bean liquid at a time until you have the texture you want. I ended up using about half of the reserved liquid.
Want to add a little flair to your hummus? Add a couple of squeezes of lemon juice, drizzle some olive oil over the top, add in some roasted red peppers, roasted garlic, or even pine nuts. If you like your hummus a bit saltier, go ahead and add in a pinch of salt.
I seriously cannot keep this in the fridge. It's my family's go-to snack now, especially with pita bread or crackers. Cut up a few veggies and you're all set.
