It's a common occurrence when we visit Manhattan to wake up at the crack of dawn, rush down to Battery Park, speed walk to the Liberty Island Ferry- only to find the queue hours and hours long. So, with little time and a thousands things we want to see on our hands, we put our tails between our legs and walk away.
This time, however, was different. We made it a point to visit the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island no matter what the wait. If it does matter, it took us 5 hours to complete the visit. Want the full scoop on our visit? Here you go.
Was it worth it?
You betcha.
The symbol of freedom for our country, the Statue of liberty is what immigrants by boat saw from the distance, and they knew they were only a few moments away from becoming Americans. My great grandparents saw the Statue when they traveled from Scotland and I wanted The Kid to see what they saw- that shining-in-the-sun icon of The United States.
We had perfect July weather in Manhattan last week, so with our tails wagging this time, we hit Liberty Island and stood, mouths gaping and eyes smiling. I told my daughter about the stories that have been passed down to me about her Scottish relatives and how we had scans of the ship's logs when they entered the country. I also reminded her of how, when she was a little girl, she used to call it "The Statue of Delivery".
It makes sense, doesn't it? I guess if immigrants saw they statue, they knew they were delivered to America.
Happy travels!
