I know bakeries.
I mean, I really know bakeries. Baking is my favorite way to bring ingredients together and I already can't wait for the heat of summer to draw to a close, to pull my sweaters out of storage, and pull out the cookie sheets and baking pans from the pantry cupboards and start whipping up some of my favorite tried and true recipes.
When my family is on vacation, we make it a point to seek out local bakeries to try the local flavors. And when we're in Pittsburgh we hit The Strip District to take home locally grown produce, freshly made loaves of bread and, of course, dessert! You can find pretty much every style of cuisine and the ingredients to make it in The Strip.
A current baking trend is adding beer and liquor to cookies and cupcakes and Eliza's Oven at the Pittsburgh Public Market in The Strip offers delicious treats baked with the spirits and brew from local distilleries and craft breweries. Not only do the boozy desserts have a complexity that only a great rum or stout can give them, but they are baked to perfection and just downright beautiful as well.
Mr. Locke and I stopped in to Pittsburgh Public Market on a Flavor of Pittsburgh tour (a lot more on that later!) and It took a double take when we were racing through the market. we had to save some time at the end of our visit to chat with Eliza herself and I loved her dedication to using only local brews and spirits, quality ingredients, and taking a common dessert and creating it with a twist.
I also promised we'd return to The Market soon for another visit and delve into all of her offerings. That will be one heck of a taste test!
Happy Travels!
