Never Too Old for S'mores!

S'mores definitely brings out the kid in me- which isn't too hard to do nowadays. No matter if I've just had the biggest meal of my life, there's always room for a bite or two of those ooey, gooey marshmallow, decadent chocolate, and crisp graham crackers camping staples.

There were around a dozen of us that night: all writers from all different walks of life with different writing styles and different food favorites. Show us all s’mores and we became 7-year olds again! Oohing and ahhing over the pretty indoor setup before dinner, we all couldn’t wait until after dinner to grab a stick and toast (or in my case catch fire to. I’ve always loved burnt marshmallows!) the marshmallows until they became that perfect, gooey consistency- and then smash them in between golden graham crackers and chocolate bar pieces. It was so fun to see a dozen adults (Mr. Locke included!) and their faces all alight with the memories of childhood summers rushing back.

I, personally, didn’t enjoy my first s’more until I was an adult. Kooky, I know. In my defense, I never attended kids camp and lived in Eastern Canada/Northern Maine and never had an opportunity to try one. Maybe they’re not as well recognized there? So now, I’m making up for lost time and channeling my inner child when it comes to s’mores.

This shot is from my first night at Punderson Manor State Park Lodge. Although they do have an outdoor fire pit at the back of the manor for guests to create their own, they brought the favorite camping treat into the lodge for us and we had a tasty treat via modern conveniences, aka Sterno cans.

And what a convenience it was to be a kid again.

Who wants s'mores?

Happy Travels!
