When I think of historical Pittsburgh hotels, Omni William Penn is certainly on my short list. The hotel is one of my family's favorites when visiting the city, and its old-fashioned ambiance with modern touches is only one of the reasons we love the property. This week, my family and I had the honor of celebrating its 100th birthday- in style and with a 5-foot tall birthday cake!
Celebrating in Style
Thursday, March 10th was all about fashion- both classic and modern. Famous Pittsburgh women in media participated in the 20-minute show and transformed the lobby into a hip, fun style fest!
Venison tartar was a definite hors d'oeuvre highlight.
Let Them Eat Cake!
Wednesday, March 9, 2016, was the 100th birthday celebration for Omni William Penn Hotel- and the cake was the focus of the party!
The cake donned 100 candles that were all lit in a giant circle on the bottom tier. After singing the traditional "Happy Birthday" song, it was time to let them eat cake!
Prantl's Bakery, famous for its Burnt Almond Torte (the #1 rated cake in America!), collaborated with Art Institute students to create a five-foot tall, five-foot wide confection. Weighing right around one ton, are you curious as to what it took to make it?
- 366 pounds of flour
- 366 pounds of sugar
- 2,530 eggs
- 28 gallons of soybean oil
- 20 gallons of water
After a lovely speech from MC and Pittsburgh's Rick Sebak, the cake was cut and all party guests received a nice, big slice (the cake offered 10,000 slices in all!). Leftover cake will be donated to the local food bank.
I couldn't help myself when I learned that Rick Sebak loves selfies! He's such a great guy and I cannot help but think of him as one of THE voices of Pittsburgh.
